A real swiss army knife of a post - un vrai billet-couteau suisse

If the thoughts that went through my mind during my evening shower are any indication, there should be a Non Sequitur Award just for this post.
I'm on vacation, I spend time crocheting and reading. The funny thing (funny as in strange, not as in ah-ah) is, when I had a really hard time geting used of the ESAT and working again, I now have the same difficulties adapting to being inactive again. But I still count the days of vacation, dreading the day I have to come back.

So, I'm crocheting. And today this idea came to me : if I prefer crochet to sewing or even knitting, it's because of the saying : measure twice, cut once. THE unavoidable principle of sewing. When sewing, you have to prepare everything and think about everything before cutting just once for all, which is akin to set things in stone and mandatorily keep going with your first intentions. With knitting, one can begin and make the project evolve step by step, at one's will. One can even undo what's been done (with this exception : steeks). Nothing inexorable once you've started. And it's even truer with crochet as it is, unlike knitting, non linear and allows for more experimentation and improvisation. And I'm terribly fickle, I start a project and I change it ten times along the road, with the consequence that I know what I'm starting with, not what I'll end up with.

If I ever sew, it will be the Natalie Chanin's way.  By hand, simple, ample but feminine shapes, maybe not with as much ornementation; maybe just one or two reverse appliqués. But absolutely, mandatorily by hand. I've always had this irrational fear of getting a sewing machine needle through my finger...well, it was irrational until I saw this pic on Ravelry...shudder...the needle went totally through the finger, and it was right in the middle of the nail. Furthermore, I think sewing by hand would retain crochet or knitting's meditative aspect. A little slowness is good. And I'm a coward.

So, I started a crochet project, in Kalinka linen in the Cyan shade. I hope I have enough in my stash for a high-low top, but I doubt that.(Thinking of this, in french hi-lo dresses are called robes mulet, as in, referencing the quintessential haircut of the eighties; funny, isn't it?) And of course, no way to tell what I'll really end up with. So far I did the top from the neckline to under the armpits. So I'm just starting.

And otherwise, I'm reading the Queen and I by Sue Townsend. 1992, the UK, elections time. The republicans  win. First decision of the Prime Minister : make the Queen abdicate and relocate the whole royal family in the most miserable suburban social housings. So they are now expected to live without servants, with only benefits. Some thrive more than the others, depending on their adaptability. I read about a little more than the half of the novel and it's really entertaining. I know a lot of people were disappointed by the ending, so I searched a little bit, and it ends like I imagined it would. The author went the easy way, indeed, but it would have been really hard to find another more convincing ending. The book was written when Diana and Queen Mum were alive, and before the divorce. So one can read about how Diana is reacting and is jealous of her husband's interest for a neighbour, which gives the novel an alternative reality aura. I suppose it aged a lot, but it's still entertaining.

Voilà pour aujourd'hui :)

That's all for today :)

    1. Thanks :)
You'll enjoy that book if you check it out; one could assume that it would be quite fluffy, but it's rather satirical. This is the author of the diary of Adrian Mole, aged 13 3/4, by the way

  2. I love hearing about other people's creative processes, as mine are always changing. I seem to be mixing my processes up a little more and trying on other things. Glad the crochet is going well and working for you, and remember, you are not losing these other skills just exploring others at the same time.
