Better - Du mieux

On verra.

SO I've been working in a sheltered work facility for two weeks. I was very affraid because my last experience in such a facility ( called ESAT) was a disaster but now it's OK. That ESAT is geared toward people with mental delays, with a small percentage of other disabilities. The disastrous ESAT was specialised in psychiatric conditions, which at first thought was a better match for me, but there was a lot of perverse people, and the fact that they forced us to mingle together even if we didn't want worsened things. I was in the laudry, in the noise and heat, when all I can iron is flat napkins. I was incapable of finding myself something to do when there weren't napkins, which made me anxious because I was affraid to get yelled at by the manager. My mind was empty most of the time, and chatting was refreined, so I filled up my mind with self-harm and suicide thoughts. I had to quit after a long medical leave.
Over her, I do small assembly line, which doesn't fill up the mind either but at least we can chat and some workshops have the radio. The only bad thing is that repetitive work makes my tendonitis hurt. It's hard because it hurts most when I'm in my bed at night. I could see myself working here, but the 1.30 to 2 hours commute is a bit much. We'll see.

So, with my tendonitis, I haven't knit. I crocheted a small pouch for my tissues and coffee money and phone, but I didn't take a pic and now it's all distended under the weight.

Under the weather - Petite forme

Last post was positive; I'm affraid this one won't.
I am starting a professional orientation program to determine if I am able to work in normal conditions or if I must work in a facility for people with disabilities. I will spend a few weeks in different companies to see what agrees with me. But the jobs don't agree with me, they need quick people and leave the mind empty : fetching products in a warehouse like Amazon, cashiering, cleaning. For I'm slow and if my mind is empty I fill it up with suicidal ideation. So I'm waiting with terror, and I feel ashamed and lazy, as if I didn't want to work. I loved working in a small boutique for eight years, and before that doing administrative tasks in a minister.

On thursday I go to the psych. The work doctor asked his opinion but I wonder what he will be able to write her, he sees me ten minutes every three months and his only query is if I sleep well (answer : "too much")
IIf he agrees with it, Ii'll find myself in a big warehouse, fetching 250 objects per hour, when I am slow and in bad shape. And to top it off I have tendonitis in my left arm, wrist, elbow and shoulder; it will be torture.

An internet buddy of mine is under a similar program, but in Switzerland; her job is in a library. I'm jealous and bitter.

Some news - des nouvelles

This is a direct answer to Martine's comment on my last post. My hair is still salt and pepper, but I now sport a bob. As far as my voice lessons are concerned, I am progressing. And tomorrow I must set an appointment with a new job center for people with disabilities where I hope it will be better than at the last. Only bad point is morale that is fluctuant : as soon as I hear the song LEt it snow, I get flash backs of the 2007 holidays season, when I did my second decompensation; that said, after ten years, I can cope better; as it happens every holidy season, after ten years I'm starting to get used to it.
And now I see a psychologist every other week in addition to the psychiatrist, and it does wonders.

I want to dye my hair but I can't because I'm job searching, and it makes me sad. You see, I only like unnatural colours. When I could get away with it, I had magenta hair, magenta with black strands like hermine tails (to mock the trend for brunettes to have red highlights, which I felt unadventurous), I had émerald strands for a short time, and I had violent pink with purple around the face. It's not a whim. I feel myself only with those colours. I can't recognize myself in the mirror; I only know it's me intellectually. I recognize myself even less in pictures, unless I recognize my clothes. So these hairdyes are a way of reapproprieting myself.

Parlons d'autre chose.

Let's talk about something else. I went back to voice lessons with my new teacher. Instead of 30 minutes every week I will attend one hour every other week. I hope I will ba able to cope with the change of pace; one hour, it's long. The lesson focuses a lot on the body now.

My mojo for crochet and knitting seems to come back, but only partially; I did complete a knit pullover, but it's so ugly I won't post its photo; it was my first time with contiguous sleeves and I wanted it so much to be beautiful. Right now I'm crocheting a shrug with the skeins I have left.

Retirement - Retraite

In september, my psychiatrist retired; I'm still not over it. This july, it's my voice teacher's turn; I started singing four years ago because my flute teacher retired and I didn't see myself going on with someone else, and now, it's the same situation, I don't see me singing with someone else. She was aware of my difficulties and medications and did accomodations to my sessions : I sing while sitting because standing up makes me faint and we focus on the pleasure of singing and the repertoire rather than technique, which makes me gag. And she's very patient with my memory lapses due to the medication. I can't be sure the new teacher will be as patient. So I think I'll stop taking voice lessons and do activities at the free mental health dispensary instead, and it will be better for my budget.
All this to state everybody retires, and I know it's well deserved, I still feel left alone. My biggest fear is that my GP follows the trend. There is a drought of doctors in the region. We're only 30km from Paris, so this is madness, but it's true; my parents arre currently searching for a new referee GP and can't find one.

All this to say I'm crocheting a choker for my teacher, in black cotton, with an irish rose on a filet crochet base.

There are days where I'd prefer it if I had panic attacks, if it meant that it would be peace and quiet between them (of course, I'm saying this not having the experience of panic attacks; if I had, I might prefer my situation); my personal anxiety is more diffused, but high every day, even if it's not as high a level as an anxiety attack. It feeds on anything and everything is a pretext for anxiety. Every noon, there is the post I must check, as for an exemple. Surely bad news, a death even. I must take bromazepam before opening the letterbox. There is paperwork, surely I will fill it wrong, and there will be problems. There is going out of the house, which as a result has me generally only going out for grocery shopping and singing lessons (I do it the same day, as having to go out for groceries motivate me for going to the Conservatoire); this vicious feeling can even hide in my pleasures. I'm very fond of the show "Tu mourras moins bête" but they always end with "you'll die a little smarter, but you'll die anyway", which makes me thing of my family memebers' departure. My anxiety doesn't have peaks, but it is nagging. The hardest part is the comments : "you think too much, it's all in your head", even uttered by my parents who should know better.
To fight this ever nagging anxiety, I have developped rituals : if I see a magpie, it's a good omen, if I switch the light switches so, if I knit for 30 minutes, if I make a toast with the coffee cups...even my bodily fluids are omens, and it's like that all day long, everything is a pretext for analyze to try to reassure myself. When I still saw a worthwhile psych, he said it was a good way to evacuate anxiety, as long as it didn't become a chore. And it is, now. For there has been an evolution : if I don't see a magpie, if I forget the light switch, it is a sure bad omen. Worse, it robbed me of my pleasure, as I do my mandatory 30 minutes knitting.

I miss therapy. I went from a dispensary where I got weekly care to an overbooked dispensary where I am seen 10 minutes every two months.

Where I get cultured - Où je deviens cultivée

Nothing new in my life, except the fact I started to search again for a job. I just wanted to write about an amazing initiative : opera, ballet and theatre at the cinema. In France, it's in Gaumont theaters but there are projections worldwide. During the winter season they show captations of the Metropolitan Opera, of the Bolshoi and the Comédie Française (I think this one is France-specific). The season started this October, so far I've seen Tristan and Isolde for the opera, Romeo and Juliette for the theater and the Golden Age for ballet. And tomorrow I'm going to see Don Giovanni :)
Tickets are expensive, but over here if you have a cinema pass card they are included, so it may be worthwhile to check with your local theater. Company name of the events is Pathé Live, but I can't link because the site is regionalised. One thing that is important to know is that it's better buying tickets early, as they are quickly sold out.

It's good for me because it makes me go out of the house, otherwise I only go out for my singing classes and my appointments with the psych. But even if I want to go, I know that tomorrow it will be torture and anxiety in order to decide to actually go. After the fact I know I will be happy to have gone, but before...brrrr...

Big Crocheted Sweater of Doom - le Pull en Crochet de la Mort qui Tue

Inspiré de ce Deviantart.

Inspired by this Deviantart.

I have been dreaming of this sweater since 2014...but I didn't imagine it like that; I started with knitting but I frogged it all and restarted with crochet. But then I suffered a lack of mojo; I forced myself to work on it at least 15 minutes a day. It lasted for months. I have this kind of magical thinking : if I crochet or knit for 15 minutes, I'm protected during the next day. So I force myself, even when it makes me profundly unhappy.
But here it is, all finished. I'll do it again with knitting when my mojo comes back. But for now I have two titillating projects : a sweater that's inspired by the one worn by Ginny in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and another that's inspired by a dress I saw on tv last saturday.

End of an era - La fin d'une ère

Since April of 2015 I was working in a facility for people with mental health disabilities; but I progressively got more and more suicidal. I fantasized on different ways of killing or harming myself. I had to go on sick leave since November of 2015 because the weight of it all was too heavy; during the last weeks, it got worse, I was stashing medication to take it all if I ever had to come back; this time, it was sure I would have taken the plunge. It made me very affraid, so with the rest of sanity I had I decided to resign; resignation letter got in the post this morning. It's both a weight I am relieved of and more anxiety about my future; ideally, I will start to brush up my German by correspondance then attempt to get into a technical translation master, as my chemistry and biology background would be an asset. But what if if I fuck up?

TO complicate things, my psych has retired. He might open a private practice and I surely hope he does. My new psych at the mental health dispensary is very so-so : two questions, renewal of my prescription, wham bam thank you madam, see you in two months.

May was bad. THE only thing that made it tolerable was crochet. Crochet benefits on mental health are not enough known. It's Kathryn Vercillo's main focus.  Please go read her blog.

First, the cardi inspired by Luna Lovegood. Too large, bleh, but I don't have the courage to redo it. May have the fortitude to frog it later, though.

And then a top that's inspired by Nick Cave's ballad Where the wild roses grow. I wanted roses everywhere but finally there is just one on the sleeve, with three pendant leaves. The top looks better when worn than laying flat; I will try to take pics on sunday.

Stuff I'm not happy to experience again - Je m'en serais bien passée

During my sick leave, I have been upped to a total of 150 drops of Haldol a day, plus one entire bar of Bromazepam, plus 2 quarts of a bar if I expérience distress? I'm better but I can't stay awake most of the day. And I've experienced the resurgence of old symptoms, like restless legs, the inability to sit still without moving continuously my legs. Sometimes my limbs become weak and my hands shake. I've got phases where my eyes can't focus, too. All of this is not continuous, thank Bob, or I'd get mad. I wonder how I will manage at the ESAT.

I've got a new obsession too (I had it before, but not that strong) : I must crochet or knit for at least 15 minutes in order to have a peaceful, lucky following day. I've got a whole schedule on my phone with all the 15 minutes I did before, and the days where I am already protected. But it has morphed something I loved to do into a chore. I started a C/KAL on Harry Potter where I'm crocheting a cardi that's inspired by Luna Lovegood :

(The front. Le devant)

(The back, upside down, where I decide to add a diamond - Le derrière, avec son losange que j'ai rajouté)

As you can see, there is a lot of divergence from the original cardi. It's in purpose, I didn't want to reach cosplay-like exactitude. Sleeves are shorter, but I can add length if needed. They also have just one triangle instead of two. And I changed the two triangles at the side of the waist into my diamond on the back. There will be only one button, at the neckline. It's not even finished but I already find it hideous, so it's tagged "ugly as hell"

What a loss - Quelle perte

This is a big big loss, but a positive one. Six years ago, I gained 40kg after an hospitalisation; I tried to lose them for two years, with a diet and aquagym in a clinic that's specialised in obesity problems. No result whatsoever; I think my medication was the culprit. So I gave up, with this new goal of simply not gaining instead of losing weight.
Fast forward to now. I knew I had lost some weight, everybody told me, and I knew, due to my last sweater knitting, that I had lost 7cm at the waist and 10cm at the hips. On wednesday, even my psych told me I lost weight. So on thursday I did a thing I never did, because it used to trigger food compulsions in me : I weighed myself. I thought I had lost maybe 6 or 7 kg. I actually shed 28kg and am now under the red line of three digit weights.

I am happy but I'll have to redo my wardrobe. I also have this diffuse fear of having caught my finger in a big machinery. I surprised myself by watching thinspo memes, reducing my portions, even skipping meals and drinking a lot to fill me up. I'm affraid I might start the reverse excess behaviour. I'm all the more affraid that EDNOS in fatties is rarely thought as problematic by most doctors. For most of them, if it gets an obese person to lose weight, it's OK, even if it's due to disordered earting. I am lucky that I'm aware of the risk, but it's hard, going against compulsions. I hope I will get over it quickly.

Up and down - ça va ça vient

There are moments where I'm OK, and luckily they are more and more present, but I have my dark moments too, as last note can attest. In particular, I live at night because the days are making me anxious. I still have crochet to fill up my mind, though. So here is a little silk choker for my singing teacher.

English only

English only, as I don't want my parents to worry. I just googled "Haldol lethal dose" and was directed to a site that is all about suicide. That's when I realised I don't want to die, I just want to make a call for help if I'm made to go back to the ESAT on thursday. I know I'm extremely lucky that such facilities exist, and not far from my home, but I can't stand the permanent anxiety. I have been living at night during my whole month of sick leave, as if I was awake during the day I was obsessing about what I'd be doing if I were at the ESAT, then obsessing about my stash of medication or the kitchen knives. Up till now, the fact that what I want is serious help, not death, contained me. But still, I bookmarked that site. What prevents me from acting on my fantasies more than anything else is the fact that I don't want to go to the hospital.

Hallucinations are back. Most horrid was yesterday, I was ironing napkins, when I felt my arms getting hugely long, I had a hard time ironing these napkins, even if it's the easiest thing to iron, and controlling my limbs because I felt and saw them so long. It made me very anxious, I must confess, even if I knew it was my mind playing tricks on me. So I'm on sick leave again. Other than the anxiety during the working day, one big thing is anxiety during my commute. I have very strong obsessions about jumping under a car when I wait for the bus, or swallowing all my stash of meds before leaving home. So I decided to see if I could walk (it's about a 40 min walk, and it would be added exercize) but there is the bridge over the railways, one side is solidly protected because there is the pavement but the side without pavement isn't that protected, if someone is determined enough... Plus, this is a place where there are only warehouses and shipping companies and lots of little grassy hills between, so there is a ton of rabbits and roadkill because of the trucks, and it makes my obsessions worse.

***

Small edit 20 minutes later : I think I could write about my reading material. I've just finished Re-vive l'empereur by Romain Puértolas, who also penned the extraordinary journey of a fakir who got trapped in an Ikea wardrobe. All I can say is, his last book is as crazy as his début novel. Fishers in Norway discover two enormous boxes. Inside : Napoléon Bonaparte, and his horse, the Vizir. Back to life after a little thawing, Napoléon rejects the project the CGT (Confederation of Sad Grognards, and not the CGT union that's big in France) had for him, which was a long and peaceful retirement back in his native Corsica. As he has learnt about the djihad, he now wants to save France from the extremists. To help himself, he gathers his new little big army : a contorsionist, five french cancan dancers, two of his descendants, and a man who sweeps the city's pavements. I must say that first I laughed a lot. And then, it was the 13th of November and laughing about djihadists wasn't so funny anymore. And yet, ridicule could be a way to fight them, I think, if only to discourage candidates. Nevertheless, I laughed, but with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Sounds good - Prometteur

No writing workshop this week. Instead, we listened to the six first chapters of  a philosophical tale, The Soul of the World by Frédéric Lenoir. And it sounds so promising. Seven wise people, from different religions (or lack of religion, for that matter) are simultaneously called to the tibetan monastory of Toulanka. To be continued... As a matter of fact, I'm so impatient to know what follows that  I bought the Kindle version. I also bought Happiness : a Philosopher's Guide because that one sounds that good. And Petit Traité de Vie Intérieure, which doesn't seem to have been translated in English.

On another, totally unrelated subject, it just occured to me my hallucinations changed since I have  started working at the ESAT : B.E. (before ESAT) I had mostly intruding and rude voices, or fantom phone calls, with the occasional visual or touch hallucination  (imagine hundreds of insects running on your limbs, and you can't see them; I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy) or the even more frightening wellcoming voice, which always made me think of a mermaid trying to entice a sailor to his death, and by association, to entice me to more insanity; but for six months I have mostly seen things. I wonder if it's the way my subconscient chose to register a big change?

News - Des nouvelles

J'aurais aimé qu'on me prévienne.

Currently, I'm having trouble with everyday life and work. Waiting for the bus in the morning, I have fantasies or being ran over by a car and, once I'm at the bus station to take my second bus, I have a hard time taking the proper bus. I want to take the bus back home instead. I often feel as if reality is slipping away, just as if I was going to faint. And last monday I panicked because of an hallucination. It was raining and the rain drops were transforming into giant ants when they were touching ground. I generally rationalize quickly my hallucinations, but this time I panicked. The intern gave me the choice between hospitalisation and new medication. I chose the medication, as I know my mother wouldn't like another hospital stay. I thought it was an anti-anxiety drug. No, it's another antipsychotic. I would have liked to know beforehand. It was on wednesday. Today (sunday) I feel a bit better, I might even crochet a little, but I'm always sleepy and hungry. Tonight we're going at the Gaumont cinema theater to see the captation of Giselle, performed by the Bolchoï, but I don't know if I will have the willpower to go.

Some better news : I still have an hour of creative writing per week at the ESAT, and apparently, I'm writing well; it feels strange to me, because when I reread what I wrote, I think most of my texts are lifeless, I don't know how to express joy or other positive feelings.

News from the front - des nouvelles du front

It's still complicated at the ESAT. I feel nauseous every morning and vomit, and take four xanaxes a day to cope with anxiety, with the added anxiety that I might vomit after having taken my two xanaxes of the morning and lose their effect. I have fantasies of taking all my risperdal and all my xanax one morning and quietly go to sleep in the bus, or of voluntarily burning myself with the iron, just to have a little timeout, even if I know it would be useless and I'd be at the same point in the end. And I have this obsession with hospital again, I obsess about making a little bag with a shoulder strap so that I could take my phone everwhere with me and keep it safe from thieves, and a shawl to act as a blankie, even if I just finished a shawl some weeks ago. I'm not suicidal, these are just obsessions, but they are vivid.

Two weeks ago, I worked for one week in the "packaging" department and I felt a lot more serene than in the laundry. No machine you have to master and be careful not to wreck, no possibilities of having to manage several tasks simultaneously, no need to be autonomous and show initiative, no more customers from the outside showing up at the door. You've got a task for the day and you do it all day long, period. It's really repetitive, which I feared at first because I thought I would react the same as when I was all alone in the shop I used to work at and that my mind would start to race. But in fact, it's almost zen, and very similar to the repetitiveness of doing one stitch after the other with my crochet hook. So I asked to be transfered to this department. I don't know if it will be possible because it's overcrowded. But they let me work there again on friday afternoon, because I was feeling very low.
So I don't know where I will end up.

And my psychiatrist is on leave for two months. I don't know if it's medical leave or not, I hope not, on the phone he told me about a congress he had to prepare, but the intern I'm now seing said he was "arrêté", which suggests an "arrêt de travail", i.e. a sick leave. It's very selfish of me if he really needs to rest but I miss him, I don't know what to do with the intern, she's far more talkative than my psychiatrist, who is more into listening.

Edited to add that this morning the psychologist of the ESAT came into the laundry to make me go to th packaging department instead. I will stay there during all week. I'm very tired, it was intense, but no overwhelming anxiety, just my usual high anxiety, and no obsession. So it looks like I have a week of rest before the unknown. And we have seen a woman come to the ESAT, we're thinking she may be the new laundry educator.

A real swiss army knife of a post - un vrai billet-couteau suisse

If the thoughts that went through my mind during my evening shower are any indication, there should be a Non Sequitur Award just for this post.
I'm on vacation, I spend time crocheting and reading. The funny thing (funny as in strange, not as in ah-ah) is, when I had a really hard time geting used of the ESAT and working again, I now have the same difficulties adapting to being inactive again. But I still count the days of vacation, dreading the day I have to come back.

So, I'm crocheting. And today this idea came to me : if I prefer crochet to sewing or even knitting, it's because of the saying : measure twice, cut once. THE unavoidable principle of sewing. When sewing, you have to prepare everything and think about everything before cutting just once for all, which is akin to set things in stone and mandatorily keep going with your first intentions. With knitting, one can begin and make the project evolve step by step, at one's will. One can even undo what's been done (with this exception : steeks). Nothing inexorable once you've started. And it's even truer with crochet as it is, unlike knitting, non linear and allows for more experimentation and improvisation. And I'm terribly fickle, I start a project and I change it ten times along the road, with the consequence that I know what I'm starting with, not what I'll end up with.

If I ever sew, it will be the Natalie Chanin's way.  By hand, simple, ample but feminine shapes, maybe not with as much ornementation; maybe just one or two reverse appliqués. But absolutely, mandatorily by hand. I've always had this irrational fear of getting a sewing machine needle through my finger...well, it was irrational until I saw this pic on Ravelry...shudder...the needle went totally through the finger, and it was right in the middle of the nail. Furthermore, I think sewing by hand would retain crochet or knitting's meditative aspect. A little slowness is good. And I'm a coward.

So, I started a crochet project, in Kalinka linen in the Cyan shade. I hope I have enough in my stash for a high-low top, but I doubt that.(Thinking of this, in french hi-lo dresses are called robes mulet, as in, referencing the quintessential haircut of the eighties; funny, isn't it?) And of course, no way to tell what I'll really end up with. So far I did the top from the neckline to under the armpits. So I'm just starting.

And otherwise, I'm reading the Queen and I by Sue Townsend. 1992, the UK, elections time. The republicans  win. First decision of the Prime Minister : make the Queen abdicate and relocate the whole royal family in the most miserable suburban social housings. So they are now expected to live without servants, with only benefits. Some thrive more than the others, depending on their adaptability. I read about a little more than the half of the novel and it's really entertaining. I know a lot of people were disappointed by the ending, so I searched a little bit, and it ends like I imagined it would. The author went the easy way, indeed, but it would have been really hard to find another more convincing ending. The book was written when Diana and Queen Mum were alive, and before the divorce. So one can read about how Diana is reacting and is jealous of her husband's interest for a neighbour, which gives the novel an alternative reality aura. I suppose it aged a lot, but it's still entertaining.

Voilà pour aujourd'hui :)

That's all for today :)

feeling down - désabusée

I'm at the point where I'm questioning my motivations for working at the mental health facility, apart from the money. I'm questioning whether I'm really willing to go there on my own terms or if I'm persuading myself because society says that, if I have the tinyest possibility of working, I should. Being a productive member of society, and all that jazz... Every day I go there without any food in my stomach because anxiety gives me nausea and I don't want to lose my risperdal and, above all, my xanax. If I can stay, it's all thanks to the xanax, in particular during the morning. I eat it like candy, at least four a day, one first thing in the morning to be able to take the bus. one at the ten am break because anxiety is at its highest during the morning, one at lunch, which thankfully generally lasts all afternoon, and one at 6pm in order to stand the idea I must redo it all over the following day. I'm constantly affraid to do something badly, like forgetting a pen in a pocket or buttons on a duvet cover, which would ruin the machines. Even putting an ironed shirt under plastic is a problem because I'm affraid I will ruin the ironing doing so. I know intellectually this isn't the end of the world; but my gut feeling tells the exact contrary; and it tortures me even more when I know I can't help being anxious because of something that futile. Anytime a machine has a burp, my heart breaks. I have got halucinations where I saw the machines crying and I first supposed it was in relation to the suicide of a facebook friend, but this halucination gets recurrent so I'm not sure anymore. Psychologists at the ESAT tell me that even if it's hard, I manage to work and that's positive but I'm not that sure anymore and I don't know if I will be able to hold this job any longer. The other day my mother was watching a movie on the second Schleswig war and I caught a glimpse and realised I almost felt like the soldiers before the battle when I take the bus. It ridiculous, it shouldn't be, but there I am. And there is this superstition I have been having for 15 years at least : if I see a magpie during the day, I am protected. It could seem harmless but the terrible corollary is that if I don't see a magpie during my commute, I'm convinced my day will be disastrous, and then I am powerless at facing the day's difficulties. Another way where intellect and gut feeling contradict themselves. I only feel safe when I'm crocheting or knitting.
