Quote - Citation

If you hear a voice within you say "you cannot paint," then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.
Vincent Van Gogh
This is striking a cord. At the ESAT an educator is making me do writing exercises and told me of a site where I could publish my texts. I'd be willing, as someone who is hooked on reading would find it interesting to produce material themselves, but feel incredibly blocked. I know all there is to do is sit in front of the computer and start writing until something good comes out of it, but it is easier said than done... I think the quote is particularly inspiring because I understand van Gogh was a late bloomer in the painting field, he came to it quite late in life, and had to really work for it. We have early drawings of his were faces' proportions were wrong, like the ones a child would draw, as for an example. So maybe all there is to do is to apply myself to it, come what may.

A real swiss army knife of a post - un vrai billet-couteau suisse

If the thoughts that went through my mind during my evening shower are any indication, there should be a Non Sequitur Award just for this post.
I'm on vacation, I spend time crocheting and reading. The funny thing (funny as in strange, not as in ah-ah) is, when I had a really hard time geting used of the ESAT and working again, I now have the same difficulties adapting to being inactive again. But I still count the days of vacation, dreading the day I have to come back.

So, I'm crocheting. And today this idea came to me : if I prefer crochet to sewing or even knitting, it's because of the saying : measure twice, cut once. THE unavoidable principle of sewing. When sewing, you have to prepare everything and think about everything before cutting just once for all, which is akin to set things in stone and mandatorily keep going with your first intentions. With knitting, one can begin and make the project evolve step by step, at one's will. One can even undo what's been done (with this exception : steeks). Nothing inexorable once you've started. And it's even truer with crochet as it is, unlike knitting, non linear and allows for more experimentation and improvisation. And I'm terribly fickle, I start a project and I change it ten times along the road, with the consequence that I know what I'm starting with, not what I'll end up with.

If I ever sew, it will be the Natalie Chanin's way.  By hand, simple, ample but feminine shapes, maybe not with as much ornementation; maybe just one or two reverse appliqués. But absolutely, mandatorily by hand. I've always had this irrational fear of getting a sewing machine needle through my finger...well, it was irrational until I saw this pic on Ravelry...shudder...the needle went totally through the finger, and it was right in the middle of the nail. Furthermore, I think sewing by hand would retain crochet or knitting's meditative aspect. A little slowness is good. And I'm a coward.

So, I started a crochet project, in Kalinka linen in the Cyan shade. I hope I have enough in my stash for a high-low top, but I doubt that.(Thinking of this, in french hi-lo dresses are called robes mulet, as in, referencing the quintessential haircut of the eighties; funny, isn't it?) And of course, no way to tell what I'll really end up with. So far I did the top from the neckline to under the armpits. So I'm just starting.

And otherwise, I'm reading the Queen and I by Sue Townsend. 1992, the UK, elections time. The republicans  win. First decision of the Prime Minister : make the Queen abdicate and relocate the whole royal family in the most miserable suburban social housings. So they are now expected to live without servants, with only benefits. Some thrive more than the others, depending on their adaptability. I read about a little more than the half of the novel and it's really entertaining. I know a lot of people were disappointed by the ending, so I searched a little bit, and it ends like I imagined it would. The author went the easy way, indeed, but it would have been really hard to find another more convincing ending. The book was written when Diana and Queen Mum were alive, and before the divorce. So one can read about how Diana is reacting and is jealous of her husband's interest for a neighbour, which gives the novel an alternative reality aura. I suppose it aged a lot, but it's still entertaining.

Voilà pour aujourd'hui :)

That's all for today :)

A new Duplet XXL has been published, on lacy nets. I think I will buy it for my birthday in July.
In the seller's trailer video, I have been totally mesmerized by the page turned at t=44s.

So I had to give it a try :

A mix of Filet, lace and cables...my mind is racing like crazy.

         -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4pm edit : I hope this project will work out, because I never planed a project that extensively.

would it be a good idea (English only post)

I need something to get work off my mind and my crochet is not enough. I had thought about making a podcast. I was planning to do it in French but I've just seen that Douceplume, from Une Vie Toute Simple podcast, started offering an english version of hers. I'm constantly moaning because I have nobody to talk English to, but at the same time I'm paranoid nobody will understand me. Adding to this, I know my voice usually is awfully monotonous (apparently not unheard of, with my symptoms) and high-pitched, except when it gets manic and even higher-pitched. So I don't know if it is a good idea or not.

New clothes - Nouvelle garde-robe

So, I have lost weight. 8 cm in the waist in particular, which is enough for me to end up with most of my skirts around my ankles... I still can wear my dresses.
As a result I did a little shopping. At Tati, the cheapest plus-size retailer ever, as I hope the weight loss will still happen and these clothes will be temporary.

I surprised myself with the last one. It actually has gold motives woven in the fabric all over the garment, and I thought it was too contrasting and looking like a mess in black. As for the rest... I want to go back to my pre weight-gain style ( a mix of gothic, romantic and hippyish) but when I look at them I find them too plainly black. So I'll have to pair them with a lot of knits and crochet in romantic or boho styles! Any suggestion or visuals are welcomed.

Revive a vintage!

The Roving Crafters blog currently has an interesting contest : take a pre-1975 pattern or pic and recreate it. I have some potential ideas that alll are nagging me. Following a pattern isn't my favourite thing (I follow patterns, of course, but the fight with fiber to make it do whatever *I* want it to do gets me high every time), so I focused on inspirational pics. I asked the organiser on Ravelry : you can choose a woven cloth object and recreate it in crochet or knitting. So here is my little selection. What would you choose? I must decide quickly as, if I choose an ambitious project, I need all the time I can get.

1890 Sweater

Jacques Doucet. I want to make a little sweater. Je veux faire un petit pull.

 Nina Ricci

Let's Make Love; I know some persons already made patterns, but I want to make an aran crochet inspired project.

This sweet little heart neckline... J'adore le décolleté en coeur.

Bonnie & Clyde. I'd want to make a crochet adaptation, as I think Eunny Jang already made a knitting pattern.

I'd want to make an empire-waist top.

This one is a bracelet from Musée Galliera. I'd want to recreate it in crochet, as I'm not good enough at embroidery.

Merci :)

(except this mistress' voice is very high-pitched; might be not pretty to listen to)

I have loved podcasts since the day I stumbled upon the late Cast-On. First it was purely utilitarian : I wanted to listen to an english (well, american) voice in order to improve my oral comprehension. But then I got my smatphone and then my listening was elevated to bedtime ritual, just like you would read a story to a little girl. I don't listen to a lot of different podcasts, as a matter of fact, because I fall asleep so I need to listen to them several times to listen to them in their entirety.

I've been wanting for quite some time to record one myself but I thought I didn't have the proper hardware. But today I listened to Une Vie Toute Simple, which is recorded on a tablet, and the sound seemed correct enough. Besides, sound quality isn't always mandatory, as for an example the Commuter Knitter records in her car during her commute. So I want to give it a try on my tablet or my phone. Only last technical problem is hosting.

And then, I need your opinion : what would you want to hear? I envision this as a pod from time to time rather than a show with a regular schedule. Main focus would be crochet and knitting and books, but I'm open to other subjets. What segments, what subjects, what technique would you want to hear about?
Thanks :) I know it's a bit cheeky to ask in English for a podcast that would be in French, but that could be a language aid, the way english-speaking podcasts are to me?

I'm going to be busy - Ca va être chargé

In the part of Auvergne where my mother and almost entire maternal family comes from, three communes ( Narnhac, Malbo where my mother is born and Lacapelle-Barrès) organised a friendly association a long time ago. Soon they were joined by the commune of Saint-Martin-sous-Vigouroux.
This association got named lou pé d'Andel. It's an occitan name (southern french). An andel is a tripod to put a marmitte over a fire. Three founding communes, three feets of the tripod, hence lou pé d'andel, "the foot of the tripod". Every summer, one of the three-feet-that-actually-became-four (like the three musketeers!) organizes a big party with a feast. And every winter there is a feast in Paris for the Auvergnats from Paris (a lot of people from Auvergne used to come to paris to found cafés (still called bougnats, from the slang name for Auvergnat people). This year there is a theme : red and black (a little note for my english-speaking friends. When you say rouge et noir, it will immediately make a french person think of this 80s song.) and this is exciting me. We generally don't go, but I'd love to go this time because it would mean I'd get to make a red dress for my mother, a red tie for my father and red lacy armwarmers for myself.
For the dress, I thought of this one because I think it's one of the rare Vogue Knitting mags I own. The largest size would be perfect for her. For me, I'd see some Mrs Beeton and maybe a bow tie for my father.
But the day after the feast my town organizes an exposition where the creative associations of the town will participate. I was thinking about entering a few lace chokers, maybe some lace fingerless gloves, and this hat :

I made up the pattern by copying a stock photo from 1967 and I'm still very proud that I came so close to my original inspiration:

But we're going to decide quickly if we really want to go to the red and black feast or not. If we don't go, I'd like to make a big piece for the expo. In any case, december will be busy for me!

The eternal plight of the selfish Knitter - La rançon de la tricoteuse égoïste

I want a dress
I want a poncho that looks like a capelet in front and a triangular shawl in the back
I want a lace choker
I want a lavalière
I want a flapper cloche
I want a simpler Katwise coat
I want a lacy hoodie with a big monacal hood
I want a purse.
Too many ideas at the same time, too little concentration and time, and materials, too many techniques to learn, oh my.... that's the eternal plight of the selfish knitter.

Let's talk about fluff, baby

Let's talk about fluff, baby
Let's talk about clothes and me
Let's talk about all the good things
And the bad things that may be
Let's talk about fluff
Let's talk about fluff!

(showing my age there- oups, je dévoile mon âge là...)

Too sick to crochet (hard to crochet with hook in one hand and tissue in the other), so I made a Pinterest board about the style I'd want to cultivate : dark knitter :)

mercredi 19 novembre 2014

Still with my purse idea - toujours cette idée de sac en tête.

I'm brusquely sick with a flu-ish virus but still entertaining that new purse idea; this time, crochet!

So I've seen this gorgeous pic on Flickr (her whole flickr is gorgeous eyecandy for fiber fanatics!)and then I thought I could assemble snowflakes like these on a plum lining cotton. Seems easy enough to do.

Another possibility is taking inspiration from the gorgeous Géranium bag from Sophie Digard; mine would be thicker, as she uses a multitude of very fine linen threads to get those gorgeous everchanging shades; but I have a pastel collection of skeins of Noble from Holstgarn. I initially bought them because I wanted to make a shrug inspired by this bag. So : bag, sweater, what should I choose?

(no source. This pic is all over the Net; pas de source, on retrouve cette image un peu partout)

(the shrug could bear a ressemblance to that; I like it, as mad as it looks. Pic from a zhurnal mod magazine I found on the net, I need to buy the mag.

you know what I'd like? - Vous savez ce que je voudrais?

I'm craving a new purse. My huge eggplant Namaste Malibu is dying, the vegan leather is peeling. If I could, I'd buy a Poppins in raspberry because it's so cute and appears to be roomy, but the only website I can order Namaste from doesn't carry it. So instead I bought a purse frame, the biggest I could (I need big bags for my knitting and a bottle of water, and possibly a piece of fruit or two) : 25cm, I'm so sad I couldn't find a 30cm one with the little holes in the frame so that you can sew the top (I don't trust the textile glue-only ones).
Right now I have two ideas. One is simple and luxurious; I've got a few skeins of dark petrol alpaca, probably not enough for a sweater that's bigger than a roomy shrug. I thought I could do the bag in stockinette, and then embroider constellations with DMC gold and silver thread.
Other idea is more involved but less luxurious. I have white acrylic. My dream is little aran snowflakes. It might be doable if I made them in the round, so that there would be branches in all directions, and then I could sew them together. Possibly, there even might already exist a snowflake pattern in Nicky Epstein's excellent Knitting In Circles...
Whatever I choose, I'll need fabric to line it, though.

Project dreams.

Some projects that inspire me or that I would like to do, had I the funds or the ability, but probably never will.
  • A dress inspired by this one on Etsy.
  • a top, dress or skirt inspired by this dress. I have the mapple leaf pattern in a Zhurnal Mod magazine.
  • a crocheted lace bloomer and cami set to lounge at home.
  • a jacket (started a lot of times but always frogged) with appliqués or embroidery inspired by this marriage contract between Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon :

Everest

A few weeks ago I proposed an idea for a KAL to a Ravelry group : it was about knitting or crocheting your own personal Everest. THE thing that would take your most dedication. I don't know if there will be that KAL, but I can tell you what mine would be : figurative colourwork, cables or lace.

For colourwork, I'm thinking about those double knitting marvels like the Central Park Coat.

For cables, I'm thinking about the Enchanted Forest cardi by Donna Karan (look at the back!) or the Alexander McQueen-inspired skull sweater.

For lace, one big name comes to my mind : Sharon Winsauer! From dragonflies to dragons, or ballerinas or little birds, she's the queen of figurative lace.

But what I'd really really want (zig-a-zig-aaaaah[just joking. I've got the Spice Girls as earworms for a few days now]) is to make my own. Surely there is more to do? But I must confess I'm too tired and sleepy to even contemplate such a piece of work; it would be monumental even if I was feeling my best.

And you, what would be your personnal knitting Everest?

Inspiration

So a dear friend gave me a Craftsy class on double knitting with Lucy Neatby (I want to be her when I grow up ;) ). I'm so happy!
What I really  want to make is a jacket with the back from this 1790 pierrot, in white and turquoise, I wonder if this is possible?

In the neon unknown

In the grey of the streets
In the neon unknown
I look for a sign
That I'm not on my own
That I'm not here alone
...
Stone, the world is stone
But I saw it once
With the star in my eyes.
When each colour rang out
In a thunderous chrome.
It's no trick of the light
I can't find my way home.
In a world of stone.
Cyndi Lauper - The World Is Stone. Gorgeous but so sad. And the original french song is even sadder.

I don't like neon and black. Or more precisely, not anymore. It reminds me too much of my babybat days. But I've just discovered I love allover grey with just a touch of neon. As a matter of fact, I'm thinking of making a striped grey and black Nuvem with a thin neon pink edging. So, further in this post I'll link to some Ravelry inspiration. I wanted to link to projects, but I didn't know if the people who have made these projects would agree with my linking, even if one has to register to Rav to see them. So I restricted myself to patterns. But do a project search with the "neon" tag, and a myriad of beauties will appear, sweaters with a wee touch of neon, in particular :)

Almost finished - presque fini

I finished the biggest part of my wrap sweater :

Now I'll have to crochet leaves and branches to decorate it. Bad photoshop to give you an idea :

the shape of things to come - Les choses à venir.

I have very little inspiration today, so I think I will write about my future projects. I'm making a crocheted wrap sweater, it may be finished tonight, after that I want to decorate it with appliquéed crocheted leaves. But what I'm craving right now is a tunic, or better, a dress. I wanted to make a dress inspired by this deviantart for Halloween, but they were out of black yarn. I think I might make it in light grey, with turquoise and offwhite for the sleeves.
Another possibility is made possible by this blog entry. I'd love a white knit dress or tunic with this skull chart on the back. Or better, adapt it to crochet!
In any case, I think that I will learn how to make pockets this time...
Oh, another possibility is a knit or crocheted bag. My Namaste Malibu is biting the dust.

No pic - Pas d'image

I've been an avid reader of Knitting Brioche and now Brioche Chic so I thought I could try. No problem with simple brioche in rows, it's a tad more difficult for me in the round. But Add another colour and I'm lost. I tried to follow this pattern as instructions in Brioche Chic (which I find far clearer, if not as detailed, than the ones in Knitting Brioche) were very unclear to me. I manage to start the two-colours pattern, but my main colour appears as the contrasting colour in what I did, so I frogged with frustration. I wonder if this is because I knit combination style?

I really want to master brioche so that I can make a jacket inspired by this one worn by Caroline, a contestant of the sewing contest Cousu Main on M6. I'm under the impression the biggest flounces are brioche. Plus I'd love to be able to do my own two-colours brioche motives...

Old WIP/UFO - En-cours au long cours

So. First post of the month, and already a great theme that was suggested by Peps on Rav :
What is your oldest WIP/UFO?

And it's hard to answer , as I often have really old WIPs. You see, I have an idea brewing in my mind, I take notes on Ravelry, and then I let it brewing some more. But I think the oldest might be this one. I may have listed it in 2014, but I was dreaming about this jacket with appliquéed poppies for years, from about 2005 I think. I'm not sure, but it was well before Ravelry. Problem is, I kept entering and deleting it during my stay on Rav as I was changing the parameters. I first wanted a knit jacket and appliqués, as crochet flowers are so cliché. I did a first try I don't remember, but as soon as Holst Garn hit France I bought some Supersoft for it : black for the jacket, and a rainbow of colours for the flowers and leaves. At this time, I was set on tunisian crochet for the jacket. Tunisian moss stitch. But I kept losing track of stitches, so to the frog pond it went. Then I tried knitting with dark plum Alpaca from Plassard, then I got bored and it got frogged. Then, last try, back to crochet for a summer jacket in Drops Cotton Light, light purple with flowers in various shades of white, pink and lavender. This time I made the whole jacket, then observed it bunched at the armscyes, so I frogged it entirely. That was last try.
Now I want something lighter and flufflier, so I think its next incarnation will be a Kidsilk Haze copycat, surely from Drops or Cascade or Isager Alpaca 1 or Holst Garn Titicaca. We'll see...

ETA : and look what I've just seen on Pinterest... I might have to buy that mag

(let it be known that I'm trying to draw better now)
