Big corsage - Un bouquet à mon corsage

So my parents brought me 10 balls of emerald green acrylic and black acrylic last week, plus bags of mixed buttons. I must use them as quickly as I can, as I don't know if I have enough (I'm a big girl) so I might have to buy from the same dyelots. Inspiration came today when I saw this beauty : front and back. Links to the original page are on the Pinterest page, as nobody from the EU can access the US page.

I don't want an exact copycat as, for one thing, one must plan princess seams, they are impossible if you are just winging it. And the black thingie on the neckline detracts from the general effect in my opinion. But I am going to have fun with the idea. No tutorial this time, as it's not an original idea.

I've been a fan of Kim Werker for years. To be precise, since the inception of Crochet me in 2004, even if I don't agree that it was the first site with worthy crochet patterns ever. I think this honour goes to the Get crafty forum. But that's another story. So I naturally bought her brand new book, Make It Mighty Ugly.

Ça m'a vraiment enthousiasmée.

I must confess I only started the book today so I'm not very far into it. The goal of the book is to better understand our creative demons in order to achieve more creativity. But in the very first pages, she writes about an odd habit she has, which I find mindblowing : when not sure to achieve beauty, make something ugly in purpose. What a concept! What a clever way to allow oneself to be creative and have this huge freedom that not having to achieve beauty allows! I'm really enthusiast about this idea. I even have trouble going through all the thoughts in my head because this idea created a storm in my brain. So I might go back and write about it when my ideas are clearer.

That's why I want to create a Ugly as Hell tag on my blog, for things that are deliberately ugly. I think it will give me freedom, in the field of drawing in particular, as, even if I want to go back to my pencils, until now the pression of having to achieve something that could be deemed acceptable put me off it.

I needed to see if I could do topdown pleats for my Cristina project. It's very easy. In my swatches I did pleats that were five stitches wide. I knit till I got to the place where I wanted my first pleat, then I knit the 5 stitches for the pleat width, then I cast on twice 5 sitches, i.e. 10 stitches, with a cable cast on. Then I knitted 5 stitches for the next pleat width, then CO 10 stitches, etc.
I then folded the pleats and sewed them in place with a duplicate stitch and I was extra careful that it went through all three layers of knitting on the pleats.

Cristina

So I'm a big fan of Cousu Main, the french adaptation of the Great British Sewing Bee. In episode 4, I got fascinated by host Cristina Cordula's marvellous fitted camel shirt with ample, pleated sleeves (pic here in a blog post from a contestant). It reminds me a lot of garments by brand Artka; only, it was sleeker, less romantic.

So I decided I would do a project that will be inspired by these. Furthermore, I just found a treasure trove of mohair skeins while searching the stash for my Hekla-like project.

I thought I could make a little tutorial. On my old blog I used to do posts as big as novels detailing the day to day making of a garment. This will be one of those posts, but I think I might write a redux printable pdf and upload it to Ravelry if it's not too complex. The blog post will be dense and confusing, but it's purposely to show the process of improvisation.

First, a little drawing. It's just some ideas for starting, as I usually tend to change my mind during the making.

Now, the stitch. I had a waste skein of mohair from a project, so I made swatches. From left to right and from up to down : dc with 6 mm hook, dc with 3 mm hook, sc with 6 mm hook.

So I think I will use the 3mm dc. What I loose in sheerness and lightness, I will gain it in terms of structure.

21-09-2014 :

After starting with my dark mohair, I learnt an important lesson : when you swatch, colour is important too. My pale pink swatch was beautifully sheer but the same yarn with the same hook, but in dark purple, was disappointing. So I decided I'll do it in stockinette after all, to preserve the solid sheerness of mohair.

Gauge : 19 st*30r = 10*10cm (4"*4")
The sweater will be knit topdown, so it starts at the sleeves with a provisional cast-on. Cast-on enough stitches for your cross back measurement and add two selvedge stitches. (For my provisional cast-on, I crochet a chain with a contrasting, non hairy waste yarn and I pick up stitches with my mohair in the bumps on the back of the chain stitches. When you want to release the live stitches,  undo the chain stitches and transfer the freed live stitches on a needle. There are other methods, feel free to use the one that makes the more sense to you).

And now, the first step : back and fronts from neck to armpits. Click to enlarge.

Now is the time for the first calculation, in order to achieve the shoulder slope with short rows (in red on the pic). I want a slope of about 4cm (1.5"), i.e. 12 rows according to my gauge. It allows for 6 sets of back and forth rows. Each set will correspond to one short row increment on each side of the garment (there are no short rows done on the neck portion of the garment). If my increment is made of 4 stitches, I've got a total of 4*6=24 stitches for the side of the sweater. So from our 78 starting stitches we'll have 24stitches for each side and 2 selvedges, so it lets 28 stitches for the neck portion. According to gauge the neck portion will then be 16cm wide. I was aiming for something in the range of 15 to 20cm (roughly 6" to 8"), so it's all right :)
First knit  one row and purl one row. Next right side row will be the first short row : knit the selvedge stitch, the 24 side stitches, the 28 stitches of the neck portion and the 4 stitches of the first increment, i.e. 57 stitches. Wrap the following stitch and turn the work. For the second short row, purl the 4 stitches of the first increment, the 28 stitches of the neck and the 4 stitches of the first increment on the other side of the garment, i.e. 36 stitches. Wrap the following stitch and turn the work. For the following rows, knit on the right side or purl on the wrong side till  you get to the wrapped stitch, and then knit or purl 4 more stitches (don't forget to pick the wrap on the wrapped stitch). Then wrap the following stitch and turn. Basically, each short rows goes 4 stitches farther than the preceding row. Go on till you get to the selvedge. Don't wrap, knit the selvedge. You've completed the short rows slope. I'll draw schematics, it will makes more sense.

Now  you must take the armhole width : Measure between your shoulder and the top of your armpit. For me, it's 14cm (5.5"). I don't add ease because I already have disproportionately thick arm, so it wouldn't be pretty, but if you want to, you can; and if you want to wear a tee shirt under the sweater, you'd better add a little ease. Now are two steps that depends one from the other (in yellow and green on the pic) : a length of straight knitting, then a part where you progressively add about 3cm (whatever your measurements, it's 3 cm, i.e. just a bit more than 1") worth of sttitches on both sides. According to gauge, 3cm = 6 st, so, as one stitch is increased every right side row, it means you do increases on 12 rows. (green pert of the pic)
12 rows = 4cm. So, as we must have a total of 14cm, it means straight knitting (yellow part) for 14-3 = 11cm = 4"
Knit the yellow and the green part, then put all the stitches on hold.

Donc on doit faire 53 allers-retours, soit 106rg.

Now is time for the two fronts. It's easier to do them both at the same time so that you are sure both will contain the same amount of rows.Pick up 25 (24 st + 1 selvedge) on one side and 25 st on the other with another ball of yarn. Purl one row, knit one row and purl another row. Now the first shoulder short row : knit the first front, then k4 on the other front, wrap and turn; second short row : p4 on the first front, p4 on the other front, wrap and turn. For all the following row, knit (or purl) till 4 stitches past the wrapped stitch (don't forget to pick up the wrap) then wrap and turn. Go on knitting short rows till you get to the selvedge, don't wrap and turn, knit the selvedge with the last group of 4 st.
Knit the yellow and green part as you did for the back. But warning: at the same time you have to increase for the neckline.I finally do a wrap sweater and decided to first knit a few straight rows then increase every other row. I want the two fronts to cross and meet my side just right under the breast; the length between my shoulder und under my breast is 40cm= 15.75"= 120 rows. I've decided than by thjis length, I must have a front width corresponding to the cross back measurement, i.e. 40cm too = 78 st. We already have 25 stitches (the increases for the armpits don't count) on each front, so we must increase by 78-25=53st. It means 53 knit rows and 53 purl rows, i.e. 106 rows.
120-106=14; it means there is 14 straight rows before starting increasing.
Go on knitting at the same time the yellow and green parts and the neckline increases till you finish the green part. Put on hold.

Now is time for the pink part : we will join back and fronts and cast on stitches at the underarm so that we have the proper circonference for the arm. Start by knitting the first front (don't forget to increase for the neckline!), cast on for the underarm, knit the back, cast on for the second underarm, knit the second front (don't forget to increase for the underarm)
I must say I messed up my count for the arm width, I got 18cm on the back and 18cm for the fronts instead of the 14cm rigt under the armpit I previously measured. So, a total of 36cm. My arm circonference is 46cm, so I should add 10cm(4") (no ease for me, but you can add some) so I cast on 20 stitches in order to put a marker at the center of the cast on stitches (you'll need it if you want to shape the waist). If you're using mohair, don't do the same error as me : use a provisional cast on; if you don't, you'll have to pick up those stitches later and with dark mohair, it's a nightmare.
Please take note that I usually add enough underarm stitches to accomodate either the arm circonference or the high bust measurement, whichever needs the most stitches. But here we're doing a wrap sweater, so the bust will be highly adaptable.
Knit the whole body till you get to the appex of your bust.

La suite au prochain numéro!

Idea?

I'm feeling like doing a crochet version of Hekla, entirely striped and featuring an actual waistband.

I've 9 skeins each of offwhite and dark purple mohair :

Alors, bonne ou mauvaise idée?

So, good or bad idea?

Beware, confused post in 5...4...3...2...1...0
I've started to get interested in drawing and painting for quite some while now, more as a way to force myself to express myself more, the same way I started lyrical singing lessons, and as a tool for therapy, with the added advantage that it involves not only simple expression, but imagination too, which is a field where, if it's not fiber arts, I'm terribly inhibited. So I'm starting researching on the subject, even if I'm still too affraid to dive in. Years ago, I read Drawing on The Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards, and it worked quite well .

On me l'a même comparé plusieurs fois à certains Cocteau. Circa mid-2005, lots of things to fix, but hey, I was drawing extemporaneously, it was a start. Some even went so far as to see an imitation of certain Cocteau drawings. Unfortunately it only exists as this pic now, as I burnt all my photographs, diaries and drawings in a dark moment)

Then 2007 happened. My personal annus horribilis that was followed by two years where my doctor forbid me to work, that's the time I needed to recover a little, and I still haven't fully recovered. I then considerably regressed. I have started to recover my fiber arts abillities, even if I'm not as gloriously and joyously intrepid as I used to be (nothing ever was difficult in that field, before 2007) but when it comes to drawing, I'm still at my regressed state. I'm starting to think I need a new Betty Edwards infusion.

So, all this novel was solely written for the purpose of introducing this : I've just read something about alla prima oil paintings and the daily painting concept. Clearly, I'm not interested in selling. I'd be very presomptuous to think people would buy my children-grade drawings anyway...But having a daily routine would allow me to create with a feeling of security and progress, it would not be that bad...Maybe not every office week day like hardcore DP, but, say, twice a week for a start. And I'd want to include other fields as clearly, alla prima is an oil painting technique and it is beyond my abilities. I'd think more along the lines of drawing, sketches for potential fiber arts projects and even, what an extravagance for me, creative writing! The only condition being, that must be finished in one day. Here we are, this wall of text for this little idea. But please let me think it over for a few days.

Incurably romantic

I'm susceptible to stars in the skies,
I'm incurably romantic,
If they're told to me all covered with sighs,
The wildest of lies seems true.
Each time a lovebird sings,
I have no defenses,
My heart is off on wings
Along with my senses.
I'm a set-up for the moon when it's bright,
I'm incurably romantic.

Yves Montand, Incurably Romantic, in Let's Make Love (le Milliardaire), 1960.
Une jolie chanson dans un film médiocre.
A lovely song in a mediocre movie.

So M6 adapted in France the BBC show the Great British Sewing Bee. Over here it's called Cousu Main (litteraly "Handsewn", but something that's "cousu main" in vernacular is something that's really neat and tidy and well made). It looks a bit too much like real tv for me, but it's so good to see handsewing at 6pm on a major tv channel.
But what really interested me, and it almost hypnotized me, was the beautiful romantic cardi worn by Caroline on the second episode of the show. There is a pic over there but one can't see it very precisely. A marvel of flounces in a long cardi.

So, of course, I immediately needed one such cardi in my life. Not necessarily the exact same, but something inspired by it.
At the beginning, I got very ambitious and planned for lace. Estonian, no less...

I love both, and I love even more the one with the leaves, but I'm beginning to think it might be too much. I'll keep them in mind for something else. Maybe a beautiful shrug...
Furthermore, I think Drops Baby Alpaca Silk in Powder gives it an air of first communion. I think I'm going to frog and use plum Kidsilk instead. It will look more like the original. To be continued :)

New beginnings - nouveau départ.

J'avais envie de changer d'air. Voici donc mon nouveau blog.

So I needed some fresh air. Hence this new blog. I called it the traveling blog because it might be my fourth blog, at least. I'm well traveled on the Web, if not in reality.

And I'm going to try to write it in two languages, as most of my Internet friends are from Ravelry.

Let's go :)

Juste pour mémoire : mon ancien blog.

Juste to remember past eras : my old blog.
